Question: When is a sunset not just a sunset?
Answer: When it is a Mock mirage sunset.
It seems that I was at the same height as or trying to look through a temperature inversion to actually see the sun and becuase of this inversion the light directly of the sun was split into 2 separate images of the sun, this light was also refelcted twice on the water - once very close to the land and the other closer to me. See here for much more of a science lesson on this phenomena.
